Parents and the three- to eight-year-old child(ren) in their life can experience some at-home learning as “Decomposition Detectives” on Saturday, June 13, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Since social distancing means Little Explorers participants will not be able to come in person to the Audubon Community Nature Center for June’s Little Explorers, Audubon is hosting the program online.

Decomposition Detectives will learn that plants and animals don’t live forever, and eventually every living thing breaks down, turning into soil, water or air. There are fungi, bacteria, and invertebrates that do the dirty work of decomposing living matter and recycling it back into the earth to become something new.

After a short lesson online about different types of decomposers and why the work they do is so important, those taking part can go outside on their own exploration to get their hands dirty looking for evidence of decomposition.

Participation includes a live Zoom lesson, online videos and a kit available for pick-up at Audubon prior to the program with craft and supplemental materials for your outdoor discovery walk.

The fee for the program is $8 for adults, $6 for children and Nature Center members.

The 2020 Little Explorers series is sponsored by Univera Healthcare. Little Explorers is presented on the second Saturday of every month, 10 to 11:30 a.m. It is temporarily being presented as an online program via Zoom, but it is traditionally an in-person program that takes place at the Nature Center.
