Rotary scholarships awarded

On June 9, the Warren Rotary Club awarded two $2,000 scholarships for “Service Above Self.” This year, the two winners were picked from 17 applications received by the club. The scholarship committee consisting of Rotarians Amanda Ongley, Randy Gustafson and Deborah “Ruby” Stone, reviewed all 17 of the applications and picked Evan Honsberger and Zachary Nugent as the recipients. Both students attend Eisenhower High School.

Eligibility for the award includes being in good academic standing and attending Warren, Youngsville, Tidioute, Eisenhower or Warren Christian high schools, being in their senior year of high school, and their adherence to the Rotary Motto, “Service Above Self”.

Evan Honsberger, a resident of Sugar Grove, attended Eisenhower High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society, he is an Eagle Scout, and he participates in the Eisenhower Food Pantry, the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church Food Pantry, he tutors Eisenhower Middle School students in math, essay writing and homework, he participates in the Boy Scouts cleanup program and their food program. Evan will be attending Jamestown Community College, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

Zachary Nugent, a resident of Russell, attended Eisenhower High School and the Warren Career Center. Zach is a member of the Russell Volunteer Fire Department and was elected their radio custodian. He is a member of the City of Warren Police Explorers and the Eisenhower Trap Team. As a member of the RVFD he has volunteered many 100’s of hours and helped many people. He is certified as a National Registry Emergency Medical Responder, Wildland Firefighter, Exterior Firefighter and in High Angle Rescue. As an Explorer, he has done hundreds of hours of community service doing things like helping to direct traffic during various races as well as helping with security and local events. Zach will be attending the Pennsylvania College of Technology, majoring in Electro-mechanical Maintenance Technology.

These two gentlemen clearly demonstrate that they adhere to our Rotary motto of Service Above Self. We congratulate them and hope that they will continue to serve their communities.

The Warren Rotary Club raises funds for these scholarships and more with the St. Patrick’s Day Rotary Pancake Supper in March, the Exchange -Rotary Club Turkey Party on November 18, and the Rotary Blood Screening on September 23.
