Warren artist Monika Garami has taken her vision of an inclusive community, where all are treated equally, and made it a reality with the documentary photography art show “Through the Artists’ Eyes,” which opened Tuesday, Jan. 3 at the Warren Public Library’s Wetmore Gallery.

The show, she said, is a collection of work created by the employees and artists of Bollinger Enterprises (BEI). While Garami said she did create a collection of black and white photographs of the artists, who meet weekly at Seasons On The Avenue for art classes. By photographing the artists as they worked, she said, she was able to capture their processes.

But it is the artists’ personalities that are truly illuminated by their work, said Garami, and she wanted the empowering, inspirational, motivational atmosphere that she said Seasons owner Lisa Streich creates for her students each week to translate into a gallery show for them.

“This event is coming to town to celebrate the artists themselves, and to give them an opportunity to show their talents off to the community. Artists will showcase their paintings, drawings, and handmade jewelry alongside my documentary photograph series of the artists creating this works. The audience will be able to purchase these items for themselves or as gifts,” Garami said.

Dr. William Clark, BEI Executive Director, said that to see art produced by the individuals who work at BEI is “impressive,” but for Streich and Garami to be able to pull that talent out of them and to then facilitate its being shown in the community is “amazing.”

“BEI has been very supportive of the idea,” said Garami.

All proceeds from the sale of work at the show will go back to the artists, to provide them with more supplies and promote their continued artistic efforts, Garami said. The show, as well as the opportunity to buy the work on display, will remain open until Jan. 30, but an Artist’s Reception and Opening Event will be held on Monday, Jan. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wetmore Gallery. The free event will feature presentations by speakers from both Bollinger Enterprises and the Barber National Institute. Presentations will start at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments to follow.
