TCCS students go outside and learn

Students at Tidioute Community Charter School are getting out of their seats, out of their classrooms, even out of their building.

At all grade levels, students are working on the first expeditionary project of the year — Camping and the Great Outdoors.

“Students in grades kindergarten through two participated in various center within the school,” Office Manager Heather Cass said. “Students in grades three through six worked together, with the help of a staff member or volunteer, at stations around the school to solve academic trivia and complete team building exercises.”

The middle- and high-school students participated in the inaugural Tidioute Great Race.

“Students solved historic clues that led them to various stations located at businesses or historical landmarks in Tidioute,” Cass said. “They then worked together at completing challenging tasks before being given their next clue.”

The school’s rock band provided the entertainment with an outdoor concert at the conclusion of the day.

As the unit moves forward through the end of the month, Cass said students will be geocaching, learning from foresters and Pennsylvania Game Commission personnel, and generally bringing the outdoors into their education.

The culminating experience will be a bonfire, Friday, Oct. 4, at the Tidioute Borough Baseball Field.
