Our opinion: Campaign is opportunity, test for center

The Kinzua Area Discovery Center has launched an opportunity for individual community donors to support the new endeavor. The Founding 50 Bedrock campaign is a chance for those who want to see the educational facility become a reality to get in on the ground floor. It’s also a good test for the center’s future financial viability. The center is planned as an immersive indoor adventure that includes an enchanted forest, winding river and animals. As we’ve said before, the center would be an outstanding addition to Warren - but it comes with a $10 million price tag that will take ...

Our opinion: Roundabout worries cool off

It appears the learning curve has paid off with the traffic circle in the city of Warren. Despite plenty of opposition and concern for the project in 2023, motorists are taking the roundabout in stride, according to our poll last week. In our question, “Are you comfortable with the Warren roundabout?” more than 71% answered yes and about 29% said no. Those results are in line with what state officials believe. “For us, it’s simple. Roundabouts remove cross-traffic turns and eliminate T-bone crashes, while improving traffic flow” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “Any ...

Our opinion: Safe, reliable water must be priority

It’s been more than three months since Tidioute residents have been able to turn on their water faucet and simply use their water. It could still be another month before they can do so again depending on weather conditions and how quickly repairs are made. The Southwest Warren County Municipal Authority is still working to stabilize its public water system following months of pressure loss, filtration problems and storm-related turbidity spikes. Crews have made progress in stabilizing portions of the system following a major waterline repair completed May 6. The Contact Tank has ...

Our opinion: Boating is a boost in Tidioute

We’re reminded quite often about the importance of the Allegheny River in Warren County. Recently, that reminder came from the borough of Tidioute, where an expansion of the borough’s access to the river is in the works with a $500,000 project to expand an existing boat launch from one lane to two, the addition of an ADA-accessible kayak launch and separate canoe and kayak access points. When completed, the project will create an expanded access point to the river that benefits both Tidioute-area residents and tourists who, hopefully, will spend time and money in Tidioute when ...

Other voices: Trump has lost the plot on governance

Republicans don’t want to say this publicly, but privately they do: President Trump’s personal political obsessions are hurting his Presidency, harming the chances for further policy gains the rest of this year, and putting control of the House and Senate in jeopardy. That’s the backdrop to the GOP revolt this week in Congress on war powers and funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Mr. Trump’s unrelated priorities are handing Democrats gift after gift and forcing Republicans to take difficult votes that could cost them in November. His desire for political revenge is ...

Our opinion: State made crosswalk decision easy

The removal of a mid-block crosswalk in the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue West in downtown Warren makes a lot of sense - though changing state standards ended up making the decision an easy one, in our opinion. Police Chief Joe Sproveri told council members that the crosswalk no longer met current PennDOT standards because it is 260 feet from existing crosswalks at Liberty Street and the roundabout at Pennsylvania Avenue and Market Street. PennDOT recommends 300 feet between crosswalks for a mid-block crosswalk to be needed. There are other reasons a mid-block crosswalk made ...
