Our opinion: Boating is a boost in Tidioute

Boating is a boost in Tidioute

We’re reminded quite often about the importance of the Allegheny River in Warren County.

Recently, that reminder came from the borough of Tidioute, where an expansion of the borough’s access to the river is in the works with a $500,000 project to expand an existing boat launch from one lane to two, the addition of an ADA-accessible kayak launch and separate canoe and kayak access points.

When completed, the project will create an expanded access point to the river that benefits both Tidioute-area residents and tourists who, hopefully, will spend time and money in Tidioute when they come to Warren County to spend a day on the river. The launch, which serves as a major access point for campers, kayakers and boaters visiting the Allegheny River, often becomes crowded during peak recreation season.

“One of the big things people wanted was improvements down here,” said Heather Cass, vice president of Tidioute Borough Council. “It’s such a beautiful part of the river, and people really utilize it. People come from all over for this boat launch area,” Cass said. “It really needed an upgrade.”

Planning is underway after contributions from the Community Foundation of Warren County, WCCBI and Warren Worx – though a big chunk of funding has been received from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Grant applications have been submitted to the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in an attempt to put together the rest of the project budget. Design and engineering work is underway, with Tidioute officials hopeful that construction can begin in 2027.

This is a project that deserves the final funding commitments needed to move forward. Hopefully, within a couple of years, we’ll see even more people getting into and out of the Allegheny River in Tidioute when the new launches officially open. We can consider the grand opening another reminder of the drawing power of the Allegheny River .

Starting at $3.50/week.
