Warren wins, Eisenhower falls in cross country

By NATE SANDBERG 3 min read

SENECA -- The Warren boys and girls cross country teams had a successful outing when they traveled to Seneca to take on the Bobcats in Region 4 action Tuesday.

The varsity boys as well as the junior high girls and boys squads were victorious. Due to not having five varsity girl runners, the Dragons could not win that event as a team.

"Seneca is a tough course and we figured times wouldn't be as fast, but the kids all showed up and ran well today," Warren head coach Michelle Johnson said.

For the varsity girls, Emma Peterson (20:48) and Nina Woldt (20:49) finished first and second, beating their opponents by more than two minutes.

In varsity boys action, Warren had four of the top five finishers with Leyton Salvatore earning second place with a time of 17:44. Also part of the scoring for the Dragons were Cole Fitzgerald (third, 18:17), Grayson Collopy (fourth, 18:38), Mason Smith (fifth, 19:40) and Chase Fetzeck (seventh, 19:50).

Elsie Woldt won the junior high girls race with a blazing 10:40 time, 98 second faster than her opponent. Ashlynn Zawacki (third), Briauna Dougherty (fifth), Claire Peterson (sixth), Grace Peterson (ninth), Kaylee Gray (10th), Delta Richardson (11th) and Emilie Youngren (12th) also competed and ran well for the Dragons.

Curtis McGraw continued his strong season with another victory in the boys junior race with a 10:26 time. Cole Enos (fourth), Zane Getner (fifth), Ridgley Blum (sixth), Jackson Warner (seventh), Liam Johnson (10th), Chase Lindell (12th) and Lucas Bosko (15th) were all instrumental in the team victory.

The Dragons are back at it Saturday as they head to Harbor Creek to compete in the annual Dirty Dawg Invitational.

PICKERS DOWN KNIGHTS

NORTH EAST -- The North East Grape Pickers have always had an impressive cross country program and that was the case Tuesday as they welcomed the Eisenhower Knights.

For the varsity girls, the home team claimed four of the top five spots as they defeated the Knights 15-50. Eisenhower freshman Josie Elms was that outlier, as her time of 21:59 was good for second place. Izzy Grosch (sixth) and Haley Ferrie (11th) also ran nice races for Eisenhower.

The Eisenhower varsity boys were defeated by a score of 17-41. Parker McBride was the top finisher for the Knights with a time of 18:38, earning him a fourth-place finish. Mason Britt came in seventh, followed by Joseph Fanelli in ninth, Alex Lund in 10th and Cameron Lindell in 11th to round out the scoring.

The Eisenhower junior high girls earned a tight 27-29 victory led by Keylee Ferino's 11:09 time, good for second place, followed by a third-place finish from Evelina Carlson. Naveen Mead came in fifth, with Lillian Ishman just behind in sixth and Luxus Wolfer in 11th place.

Lastly, the Eisenhower junior high boys were defeated by the Grape Pickers. Zach Ayers led the Knights with a 10:10 time, earning him a runner-up finish. Grant Criswell was just 25 seconds and one place behind his teammate. Andrew Grosch finished seventh and Derek Leach 10th.
