Romanosky saves Senior Night

Stewart, two doubles teams also victorious for Warren

WARREN -- On Wednesday, the Warren girls tennis team picked up a big 4-1 win over Erie on Senior Night, improving to 7-7 on the season.

The Dragons got a different result from their previous meeting with Erie three weeks ago, when they fell 3-2 on the road. This time, Warren came out on top behind strong doubles play and a pair of three-set victories in singles.

Senior and co-captain Olivia Romanosky came through with one of the biggest wins of the night at second singles. Romanosky lost to Britton in straight sets when the two first met earlier this season, but got some revenge Tuesday when she defeated Britton 8-7 in the first round of the Tri-County Tournament.

The two have gone back and forth all season, and after splitting sets on Senior Night, it was anyone's match. Romanosky saved her best tennis for the final set, playing aggressively and constantly putting pressure on her opponent before winning 6-1 to clinch the overall team victory.

"It's never easy to beat someone twice, especially someone you've gone back and forth with all season. For Olivia to play her best tennis in that final set and clinch the team win on Senior Night was a great way for her to finish her final home match," Warren head coach Thomas Pellegrino said. "What a great win for Olivia."

Jade Stewart also came up with an impressive comeback at third singles. After dropping the first set 6-2, Stewert adjusted her game plan by hitting deeper in the court and moving her opponent off the court, forcing more errors. She battled back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.

The victory was especially impressive considering Stewart had lost to the same opponent 6-3, 6-1 just three weeks ago.

"Jade's improvement this season has been incredible, and she has a bright future in Dragons tennis," Pellegrino said.

Warren's doubles teams also continued their strong play, with both teams earning victories against Erie. The doubles teams have been a key part of the Dragons' success in close matches this season, often putting points on the board early and taking pressure off the singles players.

The win was even more impressive considering the Dragons were coming off a long day at the Buhl Tournament. The team was gone from 5:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. the day before at the Tri-County Tournament.

"We were really proud of the girls today. They were tired after being gone all day at Buhl, but they stayed focused, stuck with it and got the job done," Pellegrino said. "We knew this would be a building year for us and thought we could get a few wins, but now we're sitting here at 7-7 with one match left and a chance to finish with a winning record. These girls have worked hard for this, and we're hoping to have a strong finish next week."

Evelyn Romanosky and Tia French were winners in jayvee play.

The Dragons will look to finish the season with a winning record when they travel to Mercyhurst next Monday for their final match of the season.
