Warren’s Palmieri qualifies for districts, Dragons take 4th at CHGC

RUSSELL -- There was a lot at stake Monday as the Warren boys golf team hosted the final Region 6 AAA mega match at Cable Hollow Golf Course. The top 12 scoring averages throughout the region would earn at-large bids to the District 10 individual competition later this month.
Warren senior Michael Palmieri sat in the 12th spot coming into his final home match for his high school career and made the most of it. Palmieri fired a 76 to climb up five spots in the averages to secure his postseason.
"Michael is an incredibly hard worker," said head coach Nate Sandberg. "It is always great when the hard work pays off, and today, Michael was a prime example of that. He played to his strengths and kept the mistakes to a minimum. To say I am proud of him is an understatement."
In the team standings, the Dragons finished in fourth place with a score of 330. Gavin Haibach had an 82, Hayden Hendricks an 84, Presley Weldon 88 and Xander Russell 91. Haibach and Hendricks have a chance to keep their senior season alive as they have been selected to compete in the AAA last-chance qualifier. Each coach in Region 6 chooses one player to participate in the qualifier, with the low score earning the final bid to the individual competition.
The Dragons have a tradition where for their home match, every single player on Warren gets the opportunity to play and compete. McDowell, General McLane, Erie High and Meadville all brought extra kids, making for 40 total nonvarsity kids that also played.
"Today was neat as there were 70 kids on the course at once," said Sandberg. "We are grateful to Cable Hollow Golf Course for allowing us to do what we do and for accommodating us so well all season long."
Freshman Jensen Elletson's nine-hole score of 38 paced the Dragons in the nonvarsity event, followed by a 40 from Keegan Weisseinger, 43 by Isaac Neal and a 45 by Christopher Orth. The Dragons have a quick turnaround today as they compete in the annual Marquette Invitational at Meadville Country Club, and the junior varsity heads to Smethport next Monday to compete against the Hubbers.
