WATERFORD -- The Warren High school girls volleyball team earned a 2nd place runner-up finish in the highly competitive Fort LeBoeuf Tournament over the weekend.
16 squads competed in the event where they were placed in one of four pools. The Dragons took care of business as they defeated Meadville 25-16, Union City 25-13, and General McLane 25-21. These results placed the Dragons in the “A” pool for the afternoon where they defeated tournament host Fort LeBoeuf 25-24, 25-21 as well as the Fairview Tigers 25-15, 25-20, but lost to the Corry Beavers 19-25, 20-25.
The next phase of the tournament was the final playoff bracket. Warren earned the overall second-seed in the playoffs, defeating Harbor Creek in the quarterfinals 15-12, 15-5. Looking for revenge in the semi finals, the Ft. LeBoeuf Bison stampeded in the first set, taking it 15-6. With their backs up against the wall, the Dragons fought hard and took the 2nd and 3rd sets, 15-11 and 15-10. It was down to just two teams for the title: Warren vs Corry. Hoping for some revenge from just a few hours ago, the Dragons easily won the first set 15-6. Unfortunately for the Dragons, the Beavers rallied, took the next two sets 15-13, 17-15 and the title in a "..well-played competitive match," said Warren head coach Mike Dolan.
Playing 15 sets of volleyball bodes well for a loaded stat sheet. The Dragons racked up 146 kills, 135 assists, 214 digs, and 39 aces. Hailey Cabisca led the way with 34 kills, followed by Lara Pearson's 31, and Attie Corey with 24. The digs department was headlined by Malysia Sorensen's 68 and 37 from Brynn Norris. Norris also recorded 109 assists on the weekend. Paiden Johnson recorded 8 aces, Sorensen had 6, and Addison Ristau chipped in 5.
The Dragons will next host Brookville at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Warren Area High School.
