MEADVILLE -- Warren’s Kate Shippee battled through a tough front nine Monday morning at Meadville Country Club where nothing seemed to go smoothly. Making the turn with a score of 48, she fought hard with a strong finish on the back nine with a 38 to trail Bella Deaton of McDowell by just three strokes after the opening round of the District 10 Championship.
"At the start of the morning, it was an eerie feeling looking at the burned-down clubhouse at the country club in Meadville from the fire on Friday," said Warren head coach Scott Pearson. "Couple that with the fall weather as it was cold, damp, rainy, and windy which made the course conditions difficult. However, the weather got a little nicer during the second nine and I was proud of how Kate battled back and persevered from her front nine. In her own words she stated 'Nothing is going right.' I think she played a lot better than she thought she did, as she had many good shots, but just had a that she would have liked back which can be stated by most everybody."
Deaton and Shippee have battled every match this year and Monday was no different as Deaton chipped in for eagle on No. 11 after Shippee birdied the 10th hole.
"They have see-sawed back and forth all season, so I would expect nothing less," Pearson said.
After the first round, Deaton leads with an 83, followed by Shippee (86), Claire Kennis of DuBois (90), Elle Costello of McDowell (94), Taylor Bariel of McDowell (97) and Maely Gehrlern of McDowell (102).
The final round will be on Wednesday morning and will be the cumulative total of the two days in which the top two will advance to the PIAA Championships in State College.
