RUSSELL -- It was tale of two halves for the Eisenhower Knights as they took a close game against Erie into halftime before exploding for six goals in the second half to shut out the Royals 8-0 in nonregion girls soccer Saturday.
Eisenhower's Hanna Lund started the scoring for the Knights when she took a pass from Josie Elms and sent a kick into the net to give her team a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game.
Lund connected again on a beautiful corner kick that curved into the net to put Eisenhower up 2-0 just before the half.
Eisenhower wasted little time after the break to add to its lead. Just one minute into the half, Grace Martin sent a pass to Rosalie Rondeau, who connected for her first of two goals in the game to make the score 3-0.
Freshman Amelia Smyth scored her first career goal just one minute later when she took a pass from Lund and found the back of the net.
"It was good to see Amelia get her first goal," Eisenhower head coach Ashley Elms said with a smile. "She told me before the game that she was hungry for a goal."
It was Keira Cressley's turn next for the Knights as she scored the next two goals to make the score 6-0.
"I thought we passed the ball very well today and the girls moved well to the ball," Coach Elms said. "We had a few girls missing. Maddy Lindberg stepped up and played very well on both sides of the ball."
Josie Elms and Rondeau added late goals for the Knights.
Coach Elms was happy with the win and was pleased with the play of her young players.
"We had four freshmen score today, which is encouraging, and it was good to get Sophie Scott some time in goal for us. Hopefully we can continue to improve as we get deeper into the season."
Eisenhower improved to 7-3 with the nonregion win. They are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Iroquois for a Region 3 game.
