CORRY -- Eisenhower suffered a 35-0 setback to Corry on Friday night in a Region 3 football game, but head coach Jim Penley's figurative glass was half full after the final horn.
"In spite of the final score, I am extremely proud of the effort put out by our team," he said. "We are a very young football team and, at times, we make mistakes. We have to strive to eliminate those and to play with some consistency.
"We just need to continue to work on being a complete football team and eliminate the mistakes. If we can accomplish those, we put ourselves in position to win."
The Knights (0-3, 0-2) took the opening kickoff and were eventually forced to punt. The Beavers took over and needed just two plays to score on a 78-yard pass from Jack Vanchieri to Lamech Albers. Landon Walizer's PAT kick made it 7-0.
Eisenhower could not generate any offense on their next series and were forced to punt once again, putting Corry in Eisenhower territory at the 37-yard line.
The Beavers took over and it was Albers once again, this time on a 14-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds remaining in the quarter. Walizer's kick put the Beavers up 14-0 heading into the second quarter.
After another Eisenhower punt, the Knights' defense stopped the Beavers on fourth down and took over on their own 20-yard line. From there, Nolan Gesing took a Joe Gigliotti pass for a 42-yard gain to the Beaver's 27-yard line. But on the very next play, Corry's Connor Sterling picked up an Eisenhower fumble and raced 73 yards for a Corry touchdown. Walizer's kick made it 21-0, which held up for the halftime score.
After both teams exchanged punts, Corry took advantage of an Eisenhower fumble and drove to the knight 2-yard line before Deion Canady scored from 2 yards out. Walizer's PAT kick made it 28-0.
After an Eisenhower punt, Corry's Jack Vancheiri ran for a 52-yard touchdown. Walizer connected on his fifth PAT kick to put the Beavers up 35-0.
Despite the score, the Knights were able to generate nearly 300 yards of total offense (154 rushing and 140 passing) while Corry was just over 300 (190 passing and 141 rushing). Gigliotti had 140 yards passing and 41 yards rushing for the Knights.
Eisenhower returns home next Friday for a 7 p.m. game against Seneca.
