WARREN -- The North East Grape Pickers visited Warren and defeated the Dragons 35-7 in nonregion football at War Memorial Field on Friday evening.
Without standout running back Aiden Eger, the Dragons had a tall order to fill. An onslaught of offense and stout defense spoiled Senior Night for the Dragons, who allowed the visitors to find the end zone five times in the first half to take a commanding 35-0 lead.
The Dragons regrouped coming out of the locker room, and were able to recover an unanticipated onside kick. Driving down the field, Warren found itself deep in Grape Pickers' territory and was able to put some points on the board via a 14-yard touchdown pass from Parker Kiser to Ayden Corbett. Charlie Blum successfully converted the extra point.
The Dragons were able to force a three-and-out on the next drive to regain possession and try to keep the momentum going. Kiser would connect to Grant May for a deep completion, setting up first-and-goal at the 4-yard line. A series of impressive defensive stops by the Grape Pickers put the Dragons at fourth-and-14. A tricky hook-and-ladder play to Ayden Corbett saw the home team gain 13 of those needed yards to fall just short of the end zone.
North East would maintain possession and utilize the running clock to let time run out.
Warren fell to 1-4 on the season, and North East improved to 3-2.
Warren heads to Oil City next Thursday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Oilers.
