Warren senior Hayden Holden has been named this year's Paul Clough Outstanding Wrestler in Warren County.

The award, now in its fifth year, is presented by the Clough family to a senior wrestler who reflects the qualities Paul Clough valued. Previous recipients include Cael Black of Eisenhower in 2022, Logan McDonald of Youngsville in 2023, Tucker Lindell of Eisenhower in 2024 and Griffen Williams in 2025.

The honor was established in 2022 after Clough, a former wrestler, coach and teacher in the Warren County School District, died unexpectedly at age 40.

Before presenting the award, Clough's son, Collin, spoke about his father's approach to wrestling and the lessons he passed on to athletes.

"One of his favorite sayings was, 'Mind over matter,'" Collin said. "In a wrestling match, he'd say to never let your opponent know you are tired. When you go out of bounds, jump right up and run back to the middle to reset. He would also remind wrestlers to 'act like you've been there before,' and, before a senior's final match, to have fun, do their best and leave with no regrets."

Holden, who began his wrestling career at Sheffield, was selected after discussions with area coaches and others familiar with the sport. He was recognized not only for his work on the mat, but also for helping younger wrestlers and supporting the growth of the program.

Despite dealing with an injury during his senior season, Holden built a strong varsity career accumulating 104 career wins. He wrestled at 126 to 133 pounds early in his career and at 139 to 145 pounds as a senior, qualifying for districts each year and advancing to regionals as a junior. Over four seasons, he developed into a competitive wrestler known for his pinning ability, improved scoring and toughness against postseason-level competition.

The award is funded through donations made in Clough's memory. Contributions may be made to the Paul Clough Memorial at any Northwest branch.
