Shippee starts season strong

Warren senior Kate Shippee is off to a strong start in her senior campaign. In the opening week of the high school golf season, Shippee managed an eighth-place individual finish out of 70 players in the prestigious Happy Valley Invitational at the White Course in State College on Thursday. She then followed that up Friday with a top-10 individual finish out of 51 players at the Hickory Lady Hornet Invitational held at Oak Tree Country Club.
"Kate was very consistent with her driver and irons, which for the most part kept her in the fairway or just off the fairway both days," said Warren girls golf coach Scott Pearson. "She had great shots out of the sand bunkers, which helped put her in good scoring positions. All in all, it was a very good start to her senior season."
With it being the first week of the season, several fresh faces to the program experienced competitive golf for their very first time.
"We were able to get many of our newer, inexperienced players some initial playing time and get their feet wet in these back-to-back invitationals," Pearson said. "This will be valuable going forward as they were able to see how other competitors approached their game, and see some areas that need to be focused on going forward."
Results from the Happy Valley Invitational: Kate Shippee 83, Cailee Williams 127, Juliana Polito 138, Alyssa Reichle 139. Team finish: 17th.
Results from the Hickory Hornet Girls Invitational: Kate Shippee 87, Zella Hendricks 102, Alyssa Reichle 118, Cailee Williams 127, Emma Sproveri 135. Team finish: 9th.
The girls have a short break, then are back on the road Wednesday when they compete at the Tam O'Shanter Invitational in Hermitage.
