Beers takes 2nd in triple jump at PIAA championship

SHIPPENSBURG — Eisenhower’s Ethan Beers saved his best triple jump for last as his third and final attempt earned him a second-place finish at the PIAA state championship track meet on Saturday morning.

Beers’ final jump carried him 45 feet, 1-inch, which was good enough to earn a silver medal behind Shadyside Academy’s Javon Johnston, who won the gold with a leap of 45-9. Beers also competed in the long jump where he finished 11th with a leap of 21-3.25.

“Ethan had a stellar day,” Knights head coach Jimmy Shrecongost said. “It has been a pleasure watching his improvement over the course of the season.”

Although Beers was the only Eisenhower athlete to bring home a medal, all of the Knights turned in excellent performances.

Joe Gigliotti finished in 14th place in the 3,200 meters; Chase Myers finished ninth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.0, posted a 6-foot high jump, which tied him for 15th place; Riley Robinault finished 19th in the high jump with a 4-10; and she also finished 25th in the long jump with a leap of 16-4.25; Rosalie Rondeau finished 29th in the long jump (15-10.5); and freshman Alex Van Gelder finished in a tie for 14th place in the discus with a toss of 144-11.

“Ethan Beers has been such a positive influence on our young jumpers with his knowledge and experience,” Schrecongost said. “We should be able to get some jumpers back here next year. I thought Gigliotti ran a great race. He’s a hard worker and I’m sure he’ll want to return. Chase Myers had a strong day as well, nearly medaling in the 110-metr hurdles and had a great day in the long jump. Rosalie Rondeau had a strong day in the long jump, gaining some valuable experience and setting her up for a return next year in both the high jump and possibly triple jump. Senior Riley Robinault getting to states and competing with Rosalie all year has been key to her improvement over the course of the season.”

The expectations are high for Van Gelder, too, according to Schrecongost.

“He is such a competitor. He has the work ethic and knowledge of an upperclassman. He will be competing at the New Balance Nationals later in the summer. We certainly have high hopes for him.”
