Ike relay posts school-best time, Dragons win meet

Photo by Mark Evans Warren's Cole Fitzgerald clears a personal-record jump of 12 feet and 6 inches to win the pole vault during Thursday's track and field meet at War Memorial Field.

It was Dragons vs. Knights, and Knights vs. Knights Thursday afternoon at War Memorial Field. Warren hosted county rival Eisenhower for a contest, and Eisenhower also faced Franklin in a meet that featured many impressive results and close bouts.

Note that Warren already faced Franklin earlier in the season, hence why they only faced Eisenhower.

You could argue that the Dragons came in with a bit of a chip on their shoulder, considering Eisenhower was victorious in other sports this year in boys and girls basketball, boys wrestling, and girls softball. Coming in with something to prove, the Dragons delivered, and defended their home turf from both boys and girls ends. War Memorial Field had a fantastic turnout for the highly anticipated meet, and the student-athletes delivered.

The Eisenhower 400-meter relay team of Ethan Beers, Easton Fitzgerald, Bryceton Wilkins, and Chase Myers set the new school record with a time of 44.55 to beat the 2008 record of 45.59 set by Zach Hoenes, Mike Rulander, Joe Spelling, and TJ Saxman. Also adding to his current record was Ethan Beers who improved his triple jump with a new leap of 45-7, over half a foot longer than his prior record.

In the girls’ action, Warren defeated Eisenhower by a commanding 118-30 score. The Lady Knights also fell to Franklin 54-89. For the boys, Warren earned 90 points to Eisenhower’s 60, but the Knights defeated Franklin 94-56. This is the final meet for the Dragons as they now head to the postseason next week, and are looking to make some noise.

“Going out with wins for both the girls and boys teams was a great way to end the regular season,” Warren head coach Kevin Dustin stated. “The boys finished up 5-1 and girls 4-2 on the season. It’s nice to have winning records to show for these kids who put in a lot of work. We are excited to switch our focus to championship time as we get ready for districts next week. We have had a great season so far, and are hoping to get a few through to the state championships.”
