Lady Dragons drop contest to McDowell 45-29
ERIE — The Warren girls basketball team lost Thursday when they were on the road versus McDowell.
The Trojans completed the regular-season sweep over the Dragons with a 45-29 win.
A fast start and a 20-point first quarter enabled the Trojans to take the early lead and maintain that lead for the entire game.
Despite the loss, the Dragons clinched a playoff berth with their win over Erie High earlier this week. Even though Cathedral Prep won the region, they are in a different classification than the Dragons, Trojans and Royals (5A). Since the Dragons are 6A region runnersup, they will have a shot at the District 10 title in a revenge game against McDowell.
Beating the same team three times in a season is a difficult accomplishment in high school sports, and the Lady Dragons are looking to spoil the Trojans party.
“We need to be able to perform on both ends of the floor,” said Warren head coach Jenny Phillips. “Our defense was much better last night, but just couldn’t do much offensively. We missed a ton of layups and need more people on the floor looking to score. Emma (Roell) and Peyton (Wotorson) are our top threats, but it can’t just be those two. I need the other three to be looking at their own opportunities. We can definitely beat them (McDowell), we just need to be extremely focused and work as a team.”
Coach Phillips and the Dragons will find out their playoff site location and details later this weekend when brackets are finalized.
Dragons scoring was led by Peyton Wotorson with 10 points, followed by Emma Roell with 9.
In double digits for the Trojans were Kasey Netkowicz with 19 and Adison Rivera with 10.
In junior varsity play, the Trojans defeated the Dragons 42-22. Lily Richards and Ava Wymer led the scoring department with 6 and 5 points, respectively.
