5 Lady Dragons wrestlers are moving on
SHARON — The Warren County girls wrestling team competed in the District 10 Championships this past weekend.
The girls fought hard, competed well and earned a fifth-place team finish out of the 22 teams in the contest. They also had five individual girls move onto the Western Regional Tournament in Kaylee Cyphert, Bryn Lindell, Jenna Kophazy, Emily Wiles and Madisyn Flores.
In order to move on from districts to regionals, wrestlers had to finish in the top four in their respective weight classes.
“It was an emotional rollercoaster of a postseason,” said head coach Glenn Baldensperger. Cyphert finished in fourth place, having both her semifinal match and third-place matches with her opponents on their backs, but was unable to secure the fall.
“She is having a great first year out,” said Baldensperger.
Lindell continues to be consistent on the mat, and had three falls on the weekend. Her weekend record was 3-1 with a hard-fought loss in the semis, to secure third place and move on.
Kophazy went 2-2 on the weekend, with a late reversal in her consolation finals match to take the lead, but got caught with just seconds left to finish in fourth place, but still punched a ticket to regionals.
“Emily Wiles put together her best tournament of her career,” said Baldensperger.
Seeded fourth, Wiles earned a hard-fought 12-10 decision in the quarterfinals. She then dropped to the consolation after a loss in the semifinals, but fought hard to pin her remaining two girls for a third-place finish and punch her first ticket to regionals.
“Madisyn Flores also had an exceptional weekend,” said Baldenspeger.
As the No. 5 seed in her weight class, Flores earned a pin fall in the quarterfinals, then lost to the eventual champion in the semifinals. She rebounded in the consolations with a hard-fought 9-4 decision, and then another pin fall in the consolation finals for a third-place finish and a ticket to regional.
“Leah Morrison, Alliesun Woodin and Alice Sheehy were all so close to having the mat slapped and securing a trip to regionals, but we didn’t get the call unfortunately,” said Baldendperger. “Others that competed this weekend — Karolina Martinelli, Miyah Zaso, Nakita Nelson and Abbie Darr all represented well but fell short. Abbie, a returning regional qualifier, had an unfortunate turn of events in her last match when her leg got tangled up and she ran out of injury time as she was being evaluated. I know her goals were higher than just getting to regions this season, but that’s the way things happen sometimes. She was a big part of her team’s success this season.”
The five Lady Dragons have some time to prepare for their Western Regional competition in two weeks hosted at Mount Lebanon High School in Allegheny County.
