Warren takes to the mats at Fred Bell
GROVE CITY — The Warren boys wrestling team competed at the prestigious Fred Bell tournament in Grove City.
The tournament was another example of how competitive wrestling is in the state of Pennsylvania. The Dragons fought hard, and finished 30th in the 40-team event. Canon-McMillan (Strabane, Pa) won the team championship.
Picking up wins for the Dragons were Nicholas Freehling (1-2), Cole Fitzgerald (1-2), Wyatt Wilson (1-2), Tucker Sanford (1-2), Hayden Holden (1-2; losses by injury default), Ryan Letko (3-2), Travis Childress (2-2), Carter Campbell (4-2), Sebastian Oyola (2-2), and Tyson Harkins (3-2).
“This is a really tough tournament,” commented Warren head wrestling coach Koltyn Eason. “There were a lot of WPIAL teams there and a couple AA powerhouse teams like General McLane and Trinity. It was a good test to see very good competition.”
Eason discussed senior Hayden Holden, who is only two wins away from 100 on his career, but dealing with an injury, “He is a one of a kind kid who is super tough. He is one of those guys you strive to get on your team. He is just tough as nails, has a great mentality, and is a fantastic leader.”
Sophomore Travis Childress was the pleasant surprise of the tournament for the Dragons, who won two matches at 152 pounds.
“We put Travis in as sort of a fill-in. He won two matches, which is fantastic for this type of caliber tournament. He is the type of kid that would do anything for you.”
The Dragons are back on the mat Wednesday as they travel to Harbor Creek to take on the Huskies for a 7:15 p.m. varsity start.
