RUSSELL — Clara Steinberg and Lainey Font scored 21 points apiece to lead Eisenhower to a 60-30 victory over Iroquois on Thursday night.

The Knights led 17-3 after one quarter, but the Braves, who start three freshmen, got balanced scoring from their starters and outscored Eisenhower 16-8 in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 25-19 at halftime.

Eisenhower came out of the locker room and played an aggressive defense, led by Laney Belcher and Riley Robinault.

“Our shooting was cold tonight so we really relied on Riley,” Knights head coach DJ Steinberg. “It was great to see her attacking the rim, playing tough defense, generating steals and grabbing rebounds.”

Font led the way in the second half, connecting on 13 of 14 attempts from the free throw line; Steinberg was hitting jump shots; and Robinault, Belcher and Samantha Childs were tough on putbacks. The Knights’ defense held Iroquois to just 11 points in the second half.

Eisenhower is back in action next Thursday when Northeast travels to Eisenhower, a game in which Font needs five points to become just the third girl in program history to score 1,000 points in a career.

“I am excited to watch her get her 1,000th point,” Coach Steinberg said. “She has worked really hard to get to this point. It should be a fun night.”
