Seneca girls clip Eisenhower late
ERIE — The Eisenhower Knights traveled to Seneca for a makeup game and came up just short 64-62, falling to the Bobcats in Region 3 girls basketball action Wednesday.
Seneca got out to a fast start, racing out to a 17-12 first-quarter lead, despite 8 points from the Knights’ Laney Belcher.
Both teams played tight defensively in the second quarter as the Bobcats maintained their lead at the half 28-22.
The third quarter belonged to Eisenhower as it outscored Seneca 28-16 behind three 3-pointers by Clara Steinberg to take a 50-44 lead into the final quarter.
Eisenhower, usually very good from the free throw line, went 2 of 6 in the final quarter as Seneca pulled away and took the region win.
“We can’t beat a team of that caliber when we don’t block out,” Eisenhower head coach DJ Steinberg said. “We missed some free throws down the stretch which hurt us, but it was a great battle between two good teams.”
The knights were led by Steinberg with 17 points, Belcher had 16 and Lainey Font chipped in 15.
Seneca was led by Mallory Hammill, who took game scoring honors with 21 points.
Eisenhower saw its region record drop to 6-3 and 11-4 overall while Seneca improved to 7-1 in region play and 14-3 overall.
Eisenhower is back in action Friday when it welcomes Mercyhurst Prep in a twinbill with the Eisenhower boys.
