Lady Dragons wrestle well at Bald Eagle tournament

BELLEFONTE, Pa. — The Warren County girls wrestling team was on the road this past weekend as they competed in the 40-team Bald Eagle Area Tournament. The girls’ hard work once again pair off en route to a 7th place finish in the event.

“We were 7th as a team in the tournament, but only 18 points kept us from taking 3rd place!” reported head coach Glenn Baldensperger. “This was definitely our best competition yet, we just didn’t get the wins in the wrestle backs we needed to get that 3rd palace finish. I am proud of our girls and our staff for keeping the momentum going!”

At 102, Karolina Martinelli went 2-2 on the weekend that included two pins, and continuous improvement on the season. Kaylee Cyphert (108) also went 2-2, on her way to a 4th place finish in the event. 114-pounder Bryn Lindell continued the 2-2 trend, had two pins, and took 4th place in her respective class.

Jenna Kophazy had an impressive 4-0 showing that included two pins, one tech fall, and a 6-0 decision in the finals. Kophazy took the 120-pound title and scored valuable team points.

At 130, Leah Morrison earned her first varsity victory and is showing improvement in her first year.

The tough 138-pound division featured Nakita Nelson going 1-2 with a pin, and lost a hard-fought 5-2 decision. Allisun Woodin picked up a varsity win while bumping up to 148 pounds. “The freshman shows a lot of promise!” commented Baldensperger.

At 155, Madisyn Flores finished 1-1, but fell victim to a tweaked shoulder. Alice Sheehy (170), earned a varsity win and scored “…some valuable team points!” added Coach Baldensperger. Abbie Darr, (190) went 1-2, including a pin, to earn a 4th place finish. “Both the matches Abbie lost, she was competitive in. Abbie can go with any girl in the state if she puts her mind to it,” stated Baldensperger.

In junior high action, Makenzie Hodak went 3-1, and took 3rd place. Maci Hodak had identical results as she also went 3-1 and took 3rd place. Making her debut for junior high was MaKenzie Hinton. “MaKenzie showed courage in stepping on the mat . She went 0-2, but we were proud of her!” said Baldensperger.
