The Eisenhower junior high wrestling team traveled to Port Allegany High School over the weekend to compete in the 24th annual Port Allegany Junior High Tournament.

The Knights saw much success throughout the course of the tournament with each wrestler winning at least one match.

In group one, Ronnie Shellhouse battled his way to a third-place finish. Shellhouse won three matches throughout the day with the highlight being a last second victory over Kane’s Hoyt Woodward.

In group three, Logan Beedle overcame a slow start to finish his day with two straight wins, a 15-0 technical fall and a pin, finishing in fourth place.

In group six, Hunter Vanderhoof recorded a pin, two technical falls and a 7-0 decision en route to a second-place finish and a 4-1 showing.

In group 13, Brantley Coleson faced some stiff competition. Coleson battled many tough opponents within his group and came away with a pin over Bradford’s Logan Jackson.

In group 14, Owen Ash posted a sterling 5-0 record as he earned first place. All five of Ash’s wins came by bonus as he had two technical falls, a pin and two major-decision victories.

In group 17, Eric Woodin worked his way into a fourth-place finish. Woodin earned a 3-2 decision and a pin as he showed some good progress.

In group 19, Evan Huck finished his day strong with two consecutive first-period pins over his opponents from Williamson and Corry, respectively. Huck’s two wins were good enough to earn him a fourth-place finish.

In group 28, Leeland Brown put in another good showing as he came away with another silver medal. Brown went 3-1 on the day with a pin, a major decision and a 5-0 shutout.

Also in group 28 was Braydan Taylor. Taylor battled his way to a fourth-place finish with his highlight victory coming in his match against Sheffield’s Noah Fohrd. Fohrd scored a hard-fought takedown and looked to have Taylor firmly in control. But, Taylor stayed active from bottom and scored a reversal that he then parlayed into a pin.

Though not at Port Allegany, Johnathan Sullivan had himself a great showing at the Tyrant Duals in Lancaster for the Armory Athletics Dual Team. Sullivan finished his weekend unbeaten as Armory Athletics finished seventh out of 25 teams. Sullivan’s biggest victory came when he ran up a 14-3 lead over Connecticut’s Lincoln Snell before Snell defaulted from the match. Snell finished seventh at the USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle National Tournament last season.

“I thought the boys did pretty well all things considered,” said Eisenhower junior high coach Tim Suydan, “I saw some progress from some of the kids and saw them using some things we’ve been working on at practice. We’ve got some things to clean up, however. Individually, I thought Owen looked really good and Hunter did too. Hunter didn’t finish his tournament the way he wanted to, but he did a lot of good things throughout his matches. Johnathan had the opportunity to get some quality competition in this weekend as well. He really didn’t want to leave his teammates hanging, but we wanted to give him a chance to get pushed in order to prepare him for a run at the state tournament later this season. I was glad to see he had a good showing.”
