Dragons top Seneca 66-45

ERIE — Warren visited Seneca on Tuesday and returned home with a 66-45 Region 5 boys basketball victory over the Bobcats.

It was an all-around team effort win for the Dragons as they had four different players in double digits, and eight total players contributing points.

Off to a relatively slow start that included some turnovers, the Dragons were able to rally and found themselves up 27-20 after the first half.

A big 21-point third quarter led by an all-senior scoring cast extended the Warren lead to 17 points.

Another strong final quarter got the Dragons the region win, and a 2-0 record against the Bobcats on the season.

“We had a much better defensive effort to start the game and the third quarter,” said head coach Jeff Berdine. “I wasn’t sure the type of effort we’d have to start the game due to no practice or school yesterday. Offensively, we weren’t really crisp out of the gate, but I felt the kids were able to do a good job with their matchups this time. We held them to just 20 points in the first half after giving up 19 in the first quarter last time when we faced them at home.”

The Dragons also benefited from the return of senior guard Logan Crissey, as well as big games from seniors David Manning and Jacob McMeans.

“Having Logan back tonight was a spark for us, and I do think we got solid offensive games from both David and Jacob, which are important for us when teams are keying on Logan and Lucas,” added Berdine. “We had too many turnovers early on, but as we settled in, we took much better care of the ball, which is always a key for us.”

Scoring in double digits for the Dragons were Jacob McMeans with 15, Lucas Thrift 13, Logan Crissey 13 and David Manning 10 points. GT Rupp had 17 points for the Bobcats.

In junior varsity play, the Dragons dominated on their way to the 50-11 victory with Grant Newton and Holden Demers leading the scoring department with 9 points apiece. Leyton Salvatore scored 8 points, and Charlie Blum and Jaxon Thrift each chipped in 6 points.

Warren is back at home Friday as it hosts the Titusville Rockets for Senior Night. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow at 7:15 p.m.
