Close mat encounter
Warren girls wrestlers drop decision to Corry on Senior Night
Times Observer photo by Nate Sandberg Warren senior Madisyn Flores is declared the winner after recording a pin Tuesday night in a 155-pound match against Olivia Krone of Corry.
The Warren County girls wrestling team hosted the Corry Beavers for a dual meet Tuesday night, which was the first-ever solo home dual meet in program history for the Dragons.
Joseph Massa Sr. Gymnasium was packed to the brim in anticipation for the contest. It was also Senior Night for the Warren girls as they honored Kaylee Cyphert, Jenna Kophazy, Kylee Madigan, Madisyn Flores and Madilyn Dikun.
“First off, I would say hats off to Corry. Their girls wrestled well tonight. We were extremely happy with the showing of support for our ladies tonight,” said head coach Glenn Baldensperger. “It was a great atmosphere.”
The back-and-forth match featured pins, technical falls, decisions and forfeits, with the Beavers edging the Dragons 44-30.
Warren match winners were Cyphert by pin, Leah Morrison by forfeit, Nakita Nelson by pin, Flores by pin and Abbie Darr by pin.
Cyphert kicked off the Dragon scoring at 112 pounds by scoring a quick takedown, had her opponent on her back, and got the pin 46 seconds into the first period, and the Warren crowd erupted.
Nelson, the 136-pounder, was deadlocked 0-0 after the first period, but was able to roll her opponent for the pin 26 seconds into the third period to cut the Beaver lead to just two points.
Another exciting moment was when senior Flores took to the mat. Flores was down a quick 3-0 after a Corry takedown, but she had a nice reversal to close to within 3-2. With just 1.1 seconds remaining in the first period, Flores got her opponent on her back and was able to secure a clutch pin for the Dragons.
Darr continued her strong season, racing to an early 6-1 lead. Darr would have a nice sequence of a reversal followed by a pin in the second period.
“We bumped away from probably their best girl at 108, as she is ranked fourth in the state,” Baldensperger said. “Kaylee (Cyphert) went out and took care of business! Jenna (Kophazy) was looking forward to wrestling the same girl and probably for sure getting a pin on her Senior Night, but we tasked her and Bryn (Lindell) with moving up and giving us the best chance to win the dual meet. It’s great when it works out, but not so sweet when it doesn’t. Both girls wrestled hard and that’s what we ask for.”
“I was so nervous all day and was doubting myself. With my teammates beside me, I was able to keep my composure, calm down and come out aggressive,” Cyphert said. “Right when I had that takedown, I was thinking pin, and it happened. It was amazing being with my team cheering everyone on.”
“We are coming together as a team and more as teammates. Tonight exposed some things we will be addressing in the next few weeks,” Baldensperger said. “Our conditioning wasn’t where we would like it to be, and we are still coming off some sickness. Our bottom wrestling was almost nonexistent. We can do better and we will.”
The Lady Dragons have a short hiatus until their next competition Jan. 17 in Dubois.
