The Warren High girls basketball team took on a tall order Wednesday evening as it hosted the Northwestern Wildcats, and were defeated 55-38.
By a tall order, that meant they had to take on 5-foot-11 Division I Arizona University-recruit Makayla Presser-Palmer, who broke the Erie County all-time girls scoring record earlier this month.
“My game plan was zone defense to make them beat us from the outside and contain Palmer as much as possible, especially in the paint,” commented head coach Jenny Phillips. “The girls did well, but she is in a class of her own. We had hands in her face and she still made her shots.”
Presser-Palmer indeed made her shots, en route to 41 points, but the Dragons weren’t going to just lay down for the offensive threat, as they kept the game close in the first half.
“Our girls played well in the first half, only down 5 at halftime,” Phillips said. “We had a rough time in the third quarter putting the ball in the hoop, but the girls were resilient and played tough the fourth quarter. They have nothing to hang their heads about. We played tough against a very good player and did all we could. Just another day for us to get better, especially with region play starting next week.”

Emma Roell had another solid performance, scoring 14 points for Warren, with teammate Peyton Wotorson adding 10.
In the junior varsity game, the Dragons fell 31-29. Molly Richards led the Dragon scoring with 13 points.
The girls are back in action on Saturday when they host the Bradford Owls. Junior varsity tips off at 1 p.m. with varsity to follow at 2:30 p.m.
