Junior high wrestling

CORRY — Despite freezing temperatures that dipped well into the negatives, the Eisenhower Knights junior high wrestlers continued their hot streak on the tournament mats.

All told, the Knights finished the tournament with two champions in Johnathan Sullivan and Owen Ash.

Sullivan once again proved to be a points-scoring machine. He opened his day with a bye and then jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead against Blake Weber of Fort LeBoeuf before picking up the fall in 1:26. In the semis, Sullivan ran up a large 12-2 lead over Bradford’s David McConnell before putting the match away with a pin in 2:39. In the finals, Sullivan squared off with Port Allegany’s Cooper Bliss. Sullivan took a commanding 11-0 lead into the second period where he showed off some of his Greco-Roman chops by throwing Bliss to his back with a lateral drop to earn the pin and the tournament title at 212 pounds.

Ash had an equally impressive day. Competing in a 124-pound bracket with 26 competitors, Ash had his work cut out for him. He opened his day with a pin over Titusville’s Griffin Craft. In his second match, he faced off with Corry’s Eli Bayle. Scoreless after two periods, Bayle chose down and Ash worked to hold him down. Ash was able to get Bayle turned to his back and pick up the fall with just 8 seconds left in the match to move into the quarterfinals. Ash then knocked off Sharpsville’s Kooper Harnett 10-3 and Central Clarion’s Michael McSwain by fall in 1:13 to reach the finals. Opposite Ash in the finals was Corry’s Feabie Fourspring, an opponent he had never beaten and a returning junior high girls state champion. Ash led 5-0 going into the third period when Fourspring chose the top position. Fourspring picked up a stalling point and four nearfall points to knot the score at 5-5 and send it to sudden victory. In sudden victory, Ash rolled through a would-be Fourspring takedown to earn the deciding points and claim the championship.

Though he didn’t place, Brantley Coleson turned in a two-win day. In each of his wins, Coleson gave up the first takedown before mounting a furious comeback to win by fall. Against Northwestern’s Zack Linz, Coleson was down 3-0 before scoring 12 unanswered points and the fall in 3:00. Against Central Clarion’s Solomon Pinson, Coleson was down 6-0 before tying the match at 6-all and picking up the fall with 3 seconds left in the first period.

Ronnie Shellhouse also earned a win on the day. He beat Mercer’s Lily Shealy 14-6 in a match that featured multiple instances of strong bridging by Shealy.

Also wrestling for the Knights were Eric Woodin, Evan Huck and Braydan Taylor.

“Coming into the tournament, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. We didn’t wrestle well in our dual meet earlier in the week and I told the boys point blank that their quality of wrestling as a team wasn’t acceptable. They’re capable of better,” said coach Tim Suydan.

“Johnathan and Owen continued to lead from the front as they both turned in good showings. Feabie’s one tough customer and Owen showed some marked improvement by getting past her. I think Brantley’s coming along too. I think he’s benefiting a lot from working against Owen everyday. Ronnie’s proving to be scrappy too. He just goes out there like a ball of fire and gets after it. Overall, I feel that we’re going the right way, but we’ve got to shore up our deficiencies and keep working hard to improve.”
