Special seasons underway for Knights

If you haven’t heard, some pretty good basketball is being played at Eisenhower this season.

The boys team is off to a blistering 4-1 start and, with the return of dynamic junior Austin Hanson to the lineup, the Knights will be at full strength for the first time this season.

For the girls, they sit at 2-2 overall and welcome Fort Leboeuf this morning for a non-region contest. With five senior starters, they have something pretty special happening. Lainey Font is only 117 points away from joining the 1,000-point career club. Font has started out her season on fire and is coming off a 20-point game, including six 3-pointers in a big win over Mercyhurst Prep.

Font is not alone in the pursuit of 1,000 career points. Riley Robinault, who joined the Eisenhower team from Youngsville this season, is within reach and needs 251 points to add her name to the club.

Finally, Clara Steinberg, who reached 1,000 points early last year, has her sights set on a bigger goal, namely the Warren County girls career scoring record, which is currently held by Eisenhower alumnus Elisha Jones, who set the record of 1,822 in 2007.

Steinberg, a California University of Pennsylvania signee, needs 23 points to pass Warren graduate and current Hillsdale College standout Emma Ruhlman and move into fourth place and put her within reach of Jones’ record.

For a team to have so many talented shooters on the roster at one time is truly unique, and to watch them play such an unselfish style makes them even more special.

The three talented seniors will join their teammates today when they entertain Fort Lebouef. The junior varsity game starts at 11 a.m. followed by the varsity game.
