Ike girls post impressive win over Lakers
ERIE — The Eisenhower girls basketball team got back in the win column Thursday night when it traveled to Mercyhurst Prep and defeated the Lakers 50-39 in Region 3 action.
The Knights’ Lainey Font had a huge game, draining six 3-pointers and finishing with 20 points.
“Lainey was super-hot shooting tonight,” Eisenhower head coach DJ Steinberg said. “I’m really proud of her stepping up.”
The Knights sank three 3-pointers in the opening quarter, two by Clara Steinberg and one by Font, to jump out to a 12-8 lead.
The second quarter belonged to Font as she sank three treys and Riley Robinault added a field goal to stake Eisenhower to a 23-22 halftime lead.
The Knights came out of the locker room and held the Lakers to just 7 points. Leading the way defensively were seniors Laney Belcher, Samantha Childs and Robinault.
“Laney B locked them down defensively and Childs and Robinault had some huge rebounds for us,” Coach Steinberg said.
Eisenhower was able to outscore the Lakers 14-7 in the quarter behind a pair of 3-pointers by Clara Steinberg and another by Font, staking Eisenhower to a 41-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Knights’ defense didn’t allow the Lakers to get within 9 points en route to the 11-point victory. The win allowed Eisenhower to even up their region record at 1-1. It is 2-2 overall.
“The girls came out from the start and really executed the game plan,” Coach Steinberg said. “They worked hard for this win and it showed. All of the girls contributed their strengths. It was fun to watch as they were firing in all cylinders the entire game.”
Eisenhower is back in action at 11 a.m. Saturday when it entertains Fort Lebouef in a non-region contest.
