Under the tutelage of second-year head coach Jenny Phillips, the Warren girls basketball team will display a good mix of veteran and younger players, and look to improve upon last season’s 10-13 overall record.

The team is assisted by Morgan Cook-Haibach. Kylie Cook-Haibach, Lauren Reinke, Beth Ingerson and Mark Lynds are volunteer coaches. Phillips and her staff look to instill a culture that goes beyond the court.

“Our focus is always on player growth and helping each athlete improve to reach their individual goals throughout the season. From a team perspective, our sights are set on competing strongly in region play and ultimately bringing home a District 10 championship,” Phillips said.

“We fell just short last year, and our returning players are hungry for redemption,” Phillips added. “Our biggest strength this year is the balance between our guards and post players.”

The Dragons focus on decision making as well as running multiple defenses such as man, zone and press looks. They also return key starters in Emma Roell and Peyton Wotorson, and will seek contributions from Emma Gray, Lily Richards, Abby Roell, Tori Solberg, Peyton Hagg, Emma Rarey, Maggie Bennett and numerous freshmen that show toughness and much promise.

“We’ve got some really talented post players, and when you combine that with the vision and leadership of our guards, I think teams will struggle to defend us effectively,” Phillips said. “We’re also putting a strong emphasis on defense — having multiple looks to throw at teams, both full- and half-court, to keep them guessing.”

Phillips has placed an increased emphasis on work ethic and culture.

“Last season was my first year, and much of it was about learning and laying a foundation. Now, in my second year, I’m focused on shaping our team culture, one that is built on accountability, hard work, and pride in representing our program,” she said. “We’re building it from the ground up, together.”

The Lady Dragons will face a challenging schedule overall, and will utilize consistent preparation and treat every game like they are facing the best team on the schedule.

“It’s going to take focus, determination and the willingness to do the little things right — every possession, every game,” Phillips said. “If we stay locked in on our goals, we’ll put ourselves in a great position for a deep run.”

Warren will display on-court energy and drive as they try to avenge a District 10 championship loss last season.

“We’re so grateful for the continued support from our community. It means a lot to our players to see familiar faces in the stands,” Phillips said. “We’re working hard, we’re hungry, and we can’t wait to make you proud this season.”
