On Wednesday the Warren High Girls Tennis team traveled to Buhl Park in Sharon on Wednesday for the annual Tri-County team tournament.

This event gives every member of the team an opportunity to compete for points for their school. It is a highly anticipated event, and is a highlight of the season for the student-athletes.

The tournament is broken down into eight divisions — first through fourth singles and first through fourth doubles. Fourth doubles is the largest event of the day and was made up of 29 doubles teams across all of the schools. The schools represented in the event were the entire southern part of District 10 as well as Erie High and the Warren Dragons.

The Lady Dragons made it into six of the eight finals, winning five of them. They gained enough points overall to bring home the team championship, the first ever in Warren girls tennis history.

The team totals were Warren 67 Hickory 51 and Grove City 29.

Following are the results:

¯ First singles: Lucy Harrison defeated Grove City in the first round 8-0 followed by an 8-1 victory over Franklin in the semi-final. She won the championship over Erie High 10-0.

¯ Second singles: Alannah Garza defeated Franklin in the first round 8-0 followed by a semi-final win over Wilmington 8-1. She defeated Greenville in the championship round 10-1.

¯ Fourth doubles: Ashlynn Becker and Kamaya Anthony were defeated by Greenville in the opening round 4-6.

Lettie Christie and Delilah Jones were defeated in the first round by Hickory 4-6.

Sophia Davis and Laelah Mueller won their opening round over Grove City 6-0 followed by another 6-0 win over Greenville in the second round. In the quarterfinals, the girls defeated Oil City 6-1. In the semi-final round they were defeated by Hickory and lost 4-6.

Carly Fitzsimmons and Laken Carrol defeated Wilmington 6-0 in the opening round followed by a 6-3 win over Grove City in the second. In the quarterfinals they defeated another team from Grove City 6-2. In the semi-finals they were matched up against their teammates, Jade Stewert and Alice Watt of Warren, and fell 4-6.

Alice Watt and Jade Stewert defeated Hickory 6-3 in the opening round followed by a 6-2 win over Greenville in the second round. In the quarter finals they defeated another Hickory team 6-0. In the semi-finals they were matched up against teammates Carly Fitzsimmons and Laken Carrol and won 6-4. In the championship round the girls defeated Hickory 6-4.

“Overall this was a great day of tennis and one of the best ways to close out the season before the District events kick off Saturday and Thursday,” Warren head coach Thomas Pellegrino said. “We have been the runner-up at this event the last three seasons falling only to Cathedral Prep. It was nice to see this group push through and finally grab that team title.

“I thought as a team we played exceptionally well and it showed the improvement and depth we have in our line up. We had 10 new players this fall who have never touched a racquet until eight weeks ago. To have so much success at the third and fourth doubles events is a testament to the hard work they have put in over the last two months. Our junior varsity players held it down for us in this one, and were a driving force for us in the third and fourth doubles events. Without them having that type of success, I don’t see us beating Hickory.”

The Dragons top four players of Lucy Harrison, Alannah Garza, Grace Carlson, and Sarah Harvey will travel to Westwood Racquet Club in Erie on Saturday to compete in the D10 singles tournament.
