Region clash

Knights entertain Seneca today

RUSSELL — The Eisenhower Knights put their 5-1 record on the line today against 2-4 Seneca in a rare Saturday afternoon game.

Due to a lack of officials in District 10, Eisenhower’s head coach Jim Penley agreed to the Saturday afternoon game.

Today’s game has the potential to be a good one.

The Knights sit alone in first place in Region 3 with a 3-0 record. The visiting Bobcats bring a 1-1 Region 3 record into today’s game.

The Knights welcome quarterback Caleb Jakubczak back into the lineup. Jakubczak was limited to only punting in last week’s win over Union City.

Jakubczak leads the Knights in passing (23 of 50, 301 yards, three touchdowns) and rushing (71 carries, 659 yards, 9.3 yards per carry, three touchdowns.) The Knights also feature senior tailback Logan Penley (92 carries, 561 yards), who leads the team with 11 touchdowns. Nolan Gesing has been a pleasant surprise for the Knights. The junior fullback has added 248 yards on 42 carries for a 5.9-yard average. He has scored five touchdowns.

The Eisenhower defense has 13 takeaways in its first six games.

“We have to take control of the line of scrimmage,” Eisenhower head coach Jim Penley said. “I feel that we have made tremendous strides over the last month. Hopefully we can continue to meld together as a team.”

Seneca runs a spread-option offense that Penley knows his team has to keep under wraps or it could be in for a long day.

“Seneca is a good team despite its record,” he said. “Their quarterback and running back can hurt us if we don’t keep them contained.”

The Bobcats are led by Rylan Harwood at quarterback. He is 10 of 39 for 179 yards and three touchdowns through the air. As a runner, he has rushed for 345 yards on 58 carries and has scored seven touchdowns.

“We have to take advantage of any opportunities our defense creates,” Penley said. “This is a team that wants to keep the game close and with their ability to score with the spread offense they believe they always have a chance to score. We have to play solid, mistake-free football to put ourselves in the best position to win the game.”

Today’s game kicks off at 1 p.m. at Eisenhower Middle/High School.

Starting at $3.50/week.
