Warren Area High School Class of 2022 diving standout Katie Madigan is off to another hot start at NCAA Division II Clarion University as she hit qualifying marks in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive.
This was Madigan’s second NCAA mark in the 1-meter dive, which means she will compete at the NCAA prequalification meet in March, right before the national championships.
In order to qualify for nationals, divers need a six- and 11-dive score on either board (1-meter or 3-meter). For the 11-dive 1-meter event, one must earn a score of 390. Madigan met that mark with an impressive 432.65. To make the 11-dive 3-meter qualifier, a score of 420 must be met, where Madigan’s 441.70 was well beyond that.
“I want to perform better and place higher at nationals than I have the previous years,” Madigan said. “As a team, we strive to improve every day, do our best to be ready to compete in March, and do our best to place 1, 2, 3, 4 at nationals.”
The four-time All-American and academic All-American is a redshirt junior who is majoring in speech pathology.
“We need to keep training like we have been, stay healthy and trust the process. This season, more than the others, we have been pushing each other harder at practices,” Madigan said. “We are a team that holds ourselves to a higher standard and wants to perform at the highest level. If we celebrate the small victories, the big ones will come.”
Madigan and the Golden Eagles return to the pool Saturday when they travel to Indiana, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Ralph Johnson Invitational.
