Knights look to rebound tonight when they host Franklin

RUSSELL — The Eisenhower football team lost last week in uncharacteristic fashion, as two fumbles led directly to two Seneca touchdowns and ultimately resulted in a 21-13 Region 3 loss.

At 7 tonight, the Knights welcome Class 4A Franklin on homecoming, and will look for redemption and an opportunity to prepare for the home stretch of the season and the potential to get into the playoffs.

Winless Franklin (0-7) is a team that has struggled with inconsistency in all phases and has been outscored 313-37. Those numbers would give the impression that this will be a pushover game for Eisenhower, but head coach Jim Penley is preparing his team for just the opposite.

“Franklin is a team that has had moments in games where they run the ball well,” he said. “They have a huge line and they play with a nasty attitude. Their tailback is a very hard runner.”

Offensively, Eisenhower is led by quarterback Caleb Jakubczak. The senior has passed for 301 yards (23 of 50) with three touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also ran for 659 yards on 71 carries and seven touchdowns.

Times Observer file photo by Steve Younger The Knights’ Logan Penley has scored 11 touchdowns this season.

The Knights also have tailback Logan Penley, who has proven he is a threat to score from anywhere on the field and leads the team with 11 touchdowns. He has rushed for 561 yards on 92 carries.

Franklin’s strength might just be in its defense and Coach Penley knows that his team must be ready.

“Their size advantage carries over to the defensive side of the ball,” he said. “Some teams have really struggled moving the ball between the tackles on them.”

The key to tonight’s game will be how Eisenhower’s line matches up against Franklin’s line.

“It’s pretty crucial to us to gain control of the line of scrimmage and limit their running game,” Coach Penley added.

Gaining control of the line, limiting mistakes and not turning the ball over are key.

“If we can do those two things we will put ourselves in a great position to win the ballgame,” Coach Penley said.
