‘A test for us’

Eisenhower football team entertains powerful Greenville tonight

RUSSELL — The Eisenhower football team enters tonight’s game against Greenville needing to play a complete game against the Region 2 champions.

The Trojans (8-1, 5-0) are riding an eight-game winning streak and are an experienced, talented team that impresses Eisenhower head coach Jim Penley.

“They are a complete team, they have one of the best receivers in the state, a quarterback who can run and throw equally well, and two explosive, physical running backs,” Penley said.

The Trojans are a team that not only has talented skill players, but also offensive and defensive lines that, he said, are “very athletic and play with a nasty attitude.”

Greenville is led by junior quarterback Cael Thurber. He has completed 73 of 115 passes for 1,309 yards and 20 touchdowns. He has been intercepted six times. Thurber’s primary receiver is junior Justin Schell, who has 29 receptions for 758 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Trojans’ top running back is senior Rudy Gentile, who has 971 yards on 93 carries and 16 touchdowns.

“They are a complete team,” Penley said. “They have dominated their opponents this year. They are just so sound in all three aspects of the game.”

As they proved last week against Mercyhurst Prep, the Knights (6-3, 3-2 in Region 3) have a lot of talent on their roster, too.

Eisenhower is led by quarterback Caleb Jakubczak, who has rushed for 1,003 yards on 111 carries and 12 touchdowns and has thrown for 549 yards (38 of 85) and four TDs. The Knights also have senior tailback Logan Penley, who has rushed for 847 yards on 139 carries and 15 touchdowns; and junior fullback Nolan Gesing, who has 287 yards on 45 carries and six touchdowns.

Eisenhower’s receiving corps includes tight end Gavin Lindemuth, who is averaging 21.5 yards per reception, and Penley who is averaging 10.4 yards per reception. Jakubczack has completed passes to 10 different receivers.

The Knights possess a ball-hawking defense that has created 16 turnovers (12 interceptions and four fumble recoveries.)

Coach Penley feels that his team played well last week and is confident they are ready.

“If we can see a comparable effort of discipline, intensity and playing smart football like we did last week against Mercyhurst Prep, we will put ourselves in position to have a shot, but this game will definitely be a test for us,” he said.

Pregame activities on Senior Night start at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Eisenhower High School.

Starting at $3.50/week.
