Freshman Wymer scores OT winner
GIRLS SOCCER
WYMER SCORES OT WINNER
BRADFORD — The Warren girls soccer team couldn’t let the boys be the only team this week with an exciting ending.
On Thursday, freshman Ava Wymer’s goal in the second overtime, assisted by Meea Irwin, sent the Dragons to the win over Bradford.
“The game winner came off a perfect cross from Meea near the left corner to Ava at the back post,” Warren head coach Mark Ordiway said. “Ava was able to get a body on it and guide it in. It was a beautiful play.”
The game was deadlocked 0-0 at the half, but the Owls were first to strike by finding the net off a second-half penalty kick. The Dragons responded quickly on a nice feed to Meea Irwin from Lani Wenzel who buried a shot into the corner of the net. The game was tied after regulation, so that meant one thing: overtime.
It almost seemed neither team wanted to score during the first overtime period, as the game was still tied. That changed in the second overtime, thanks to the Wymer-Irwin connection.
Ordiway added, “We had a lot of shots and near misses, and their keeper made a number of nice saves. Bradford was held to three shots on goal. Two of those shots were from thirty-plus yards out. Bella Campbell was able to tip one over the goal and out of play and the other she was able to tip up to herself and grab on the goal line. Bella showed her athleticism on both plays. We played a little too fast and direct early on. The girls settled into the match nicely and played with much more poise as the game progressed.”
The Dragons remain undefeated in region play, and have played every team in their respective region.
“Now we just need to keep our focus and finish the year out strong,” Coach Ordiway noted.
The Dragons are on the road next Wednesday when they travel to Oil City to take on the Oilers for a 6:30 p.m. varsity start.
