UNION CITY — Sporting a 4-1 record, the Eisenhower football team travels to 1-4 Union City tonight.
The Knights, who appear to be finding their offensive rhythm after a slow start, will face the struggling Bears. Still, they are a team to be wary of, according to Eisenhower head coach Jim Penley.
“They are a young squad who has had moments of playing some really good football against teams,” he said, “but at times their youth and inexperience has hurt them.”
The opposite is true for the Knights as they are settling down and have played their best football over the last two games.
Eisenhower is led by an explosive offense that is averaging 28 points per game and a defense that has given up 28 points total in the last four games. The Knights have intercepted eight passes (Caleb Jakubczak leads with three) and one fumble recovery which has created opportunities for the offense.
On offense, Jakubczak, the quarterback, leads the way, having thrown for 301 yards on 23 completions with three touchdowns. He is also the Knights’ leading rusher with 71 carries for 659 yards and seven touchdowns. In addition, tailback Logan Penley, has added 426 yards on 79 carries and has scored eight TDs.
Although Eisenhower is tied for first place with Mercyhurst Prep, Coach Penley is very aware that it is a region game and it cannot take Union City lightly.
“They are a well-coached group that always gives us fits when we play at their place,” he said, “so we’ve got to have our best effort right from the opening kickoff.”
Tonight’s game starts at 7.
DRAGONS AT GIRARD
GIRARD — The season does not get any easier for the Dragons as they travel to 4-1 Girard tonight for a District 10 matchup.
Warren is coming off consecutive matchups in which it has only put one touchdown on the scoreboard, losing by more than three scores to Cathedral Prep and Titusville.
Girard bounced back from a lopsided loss to Corry two weeks ago with a narrow 28-27 victory against Seneca.
The Yellowjackets are led by junior quarterback Ryan St. Julien, who has yet to throw an interception, while completing 40 of 67 passes for 565 yards and seven touchdowns. St. Julien has four rushing TDs, but it is junior Aidan Arnold who is the primary ball carrier.
On 100 carries, Arnold has amassed 684 yards and seven touchdowns, while senior Mason Kalicky has added another 267 yards on the ground with two scores.
Kalicky is Girard’s top defender with 89 total tackles, while Arnold, Nick Zona and Nathan Dovichow have interceptions for the Yellowjackets.
Warren takes the field tonight at 7, hoping to get back into the win column after being there in Week 3.
