Lady Dragons start strong at Fort LeBoeuf
Warren volleyball takes 2nd to Corry
WATERFORD — The Warren Area High School Dragon Volleyball team earned a second-place finish this past Saturday in the 16-team tournament hosted by Fort LeBoeuf.
The morning slate saw the Dragons win their pool with a 2-1 record. The two victories were from defeating Northwestern 25-7 and Iroquois 25-16. They did drop the match against Fairview, but they still won their pool.
In the afternoon, they split with Fort LeBoeuf 25-21, 20-25 and Corry 25-21, 17-25. They swept Neshannock 25-19, 25-13, which earned the Lady Dragons the 2-seed going into the elimination bracket.
After securing a bye to the quarterfinals, the Lady Dragons defeated the General McLane Lancers in a back and forth match by a score of 18-16, 17-15.
Warren defeated a tough Fort LeBoeuf squad 15-9, 16-14 to earn a spot in the championship match versus the Corry Beavers. Warren left it all on the court but fell short to the Beavers 12-15, 6-15.
“(There was) a lot of high-level play at the beginning of the season for these girls,” Warren head coach Mike Dolan stated. “We are still working out some kinks offensively, but coming out on top of so many matches and earning a spot in the finals shows we are on the right track as we prepare for our always tough Region 5 opponents.”
Several players had an important role in Warren’s success at the tournament and leading the way are Madelyn Nosel with 41 kills, five aces and 32 digs, Attie Corey with 37 kills, 14 aces and seven blocks, Malysia Sorensen had 52 digs, Brynn Norris with 110 assists, 10 aces and 12 kills;
Lilly Newton scored 11 kills and four blocks, Brooke Sherry pitched in 11 kills and three aces, Hailey Cabisca scored 16 kills and three aces, Julia Getner made five kills, Addison Ristau recorded 14 digs, Paiden Johnson had 18 digs and five aces, Peyton Wotorson secured four kills and three aces, Lauren Fajbik made 15 digs and Peyton Cabisca contributed 10 assists and an ace.
“Overall we played really well with our offense off to a great start this early in the season,” Warren senior Lilly Newton said about the tournament. “With some new faces on varsity, our team is finding it hard to stay consistent. I can already see how our team is coming together and I know we are going to have a strong season. Corry has a great outside hitter which our defense and blocking struggled with to keep up against. Going forward, we have an optimistic look, and I have full confidence in my team that we will keep working hard and fixing the little things. I’m very proud of how my team played and how we remained positive all throughout.”
The Dragons are back in action tonight as they travel to Cathedral Prep for a 7:15 varsity start and 6 p.m. jayvee slate.
“We played well and had a lot of positive energy on the court,” Warren senior Madelyn Nosel added about the Fort LeBoeuf tournament. “We are a strong team, but still need to improve our all-around consistency as we get deeper into the season.”
