RUSSELL — It took almost 96 minutes for a goal to be scored in Wednesday’s girls soccer game, but Eisenhower’s Roasalie Rondeau connected on a shot just inside the left corner post to give the Knights a 1-0 win over Maplewood.
Eisenhower had reason to be tired as it marked the second double-overtime win this week, having posted a 1-0 victory over Iroquois on Tuesday.
Yesterday, both teams played strong defensively and did their best to maintain ball control throughout the game.
Eisenhower had 11 shots on goal and dominated the time of possession in the first overtime.
“I was a little worried heading into overtime,” Knights head coach Faith Johnson said. “I thought we might be tired because our girls never stopped running, but they never cease to impress me.”
Rondeau’s game winner was a shot over two Tiger defenders.
“We played really well today,” Johnson said. “It was a back and forth game right from the beginning. These girls believe in each other and are starting to play with confidence.”
Eisenhower has had some freshmen pushing for playing time and Johnson was able to use some yesterday and was impressed with what she saw.
“I thought Maddy Lindberg stepped up defensively and really showed her speed,” Johnson said. “We have some promising freshmen that have really flourished this season.”
