Warren tennis wins opener

GREENVILLE — Warren’s girls tennis team opened with a hard-fought 3-2 crossover win on Monday at Greenville.

At top singles, Warren’s Lucy Harrison defeated Hannah McKinney, 6-1, 6-1.

At second singles, Warren’s Alannah Garza beat Lily Butcher, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, Warren’s Grace Carlson defeated Ada Wentling, 6-3, 6-3.

Greenville won both doubles matches. Addie Kraeling and Madison Mallek topped Sarah Harvey and Olivia Romanosky, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1, and Liv Walker and McKenna Anderle beat Brady Caudill and Carly Fitzsimmons, 6-2, 6-3.

Warren’s Scotlynn Perry, Alice Watt, and Lilly Seyler were winners in junior varsity play.

“With a very young squad this year, facing a senior-heavy Greenville team provided the exact kind of test we needed to open the season,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “It gave our first-year players a great look at competitive tennis and allowed everyone to get meaningful time on the court thanks to both teams’ large rosters.

“Greenville pushed us today and their depth and experience showed,” he said, “but our singles players really stepped up. The offseason work was evident and all three came out playing confidently and worked through first-match nerves early on. We were also proud of our doubles teams today, especially considering three of the four are first-time varsity starters. With just five days of practice together, today was the first time these pairs had played as partners in a match and overall we were happy with their play… It’s always great to start the season with a win, especially against a strong Greenville team that I believe will be in the mix for the Region 1 title this fall.”

Warren will get back on the practice courts today and prepare for its match with Cathedral Prep next Tuesday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
