Americans’ late rally sinks Tarp Skunks
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Niagara Falls Americans scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally past the Jamestown Tarp Skunks for a 6-3 victory in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action Friday evening at Sal Maglie Stadium.
Americans No. 9 hitter Allen Ramos led off the bottom of the eighth inning with an infield single — just Niagara Falls’ third hit of the game — and took second when Connor Kiefer’s sacrifice bunt was mishandled. After another bunt was popped up for the first out, a passed ball allowed both runners to move up. Following a lineout to shortstop Brady Marshall, Gavyn Boyle walked to load the bases.
Greydon Miller then hit a two-run single to give the Americans a 4-3 lead before an intentional walk and a two-run double from Ian Huang made it 6-3.
Hudson Boring pitched around a pair of walks in the top of the ninth to earn a save for Niagara Falls.
Nick Ianniello (6-1) suffered his first loss for the Tarp Skunks, allowing four unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three in 3 2/3 innings. Cohen Harris started for Jamestown, allowing two runs on a hit and three walks while striking out two in four innings.
Brady McGuire tripled and scored; Nolan Smith doubled; and Ben Slanker, Blake Herman and Branston Lindquist each drove in a run for the Tarp Skunks.
Jamestown, which is 7-3 in its last 10 games, fell to 23-13 on the season, two games back of first-place Batavia in the West Division. The Americans (25-15) pulled into a virtual tie with the Tarp Skunks.
Jamestown returns to action at 6:30 p.m. today at Diethrick Park against the last-place Niagara Ironbacks (6-31). The Tarp Skunks will travel to Elmira on Sunday for a doubleheader with the Pioneers.
