YOUNGSVILLE — The 23rd annual Brent McKown Learn-to-Fish Day will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Brokenstraw Fish and Game Club, Mead Run Road in Youngsville. Fish-and-Game Club Members and the McKown family will hand out fishing gear — poles, fishing boxes of lures, hooks, etc. — to children ages 2-15. Trout will be stocked on the grounds for catching in an effort to promote youth getting into the sport. Refreshments will be available.
The program is open to boys and girls ages 2-15. Adult participation is required for each child. The program is free and pre-registration is required. The program will accept the first 50 to register. The children must be registered by calling Derek McKown or Pam Tidrick at 814-489- 3110. To qualify, children must be registered by July 30th.
Monetary donations to the program are needed annually and can be arranged by calling 814-489-3110.
The learn-to-fish program is a memorial program to Brent McKown (1935-2001), who was an avid fisherman all his life in Warren and Chautauqua counties. He also loved to help children learn to fish and enjoy the outdoors. The program, which was begun in 2002 in his memory, provides young people the opportunity to learn about fishing and the necessary starting equipment.
