Barnett shines on hill, Skunks roll to victory
ST. CATHARINES, Ontario — Easton Barnett went nearly as long as any Jamestown Tarp Skunks pitcher this summer.
Eventually, his team’s offense came alive to support him.
Barnett tossed seven innings of seven-hit ball, allowing a run and no walks with four strikeouts as Jamestown beat the Niagara Ironbacks 12-1 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action at George Taylor Field.
Barnett’s performance was the longest a Tarp Skunks pitcher has lasted since Christian Pencek’s eight-inning outing June 14 in a 3-2 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs.
Niagara (2-14) actually led 1-0 through four innings before the Tarp Skunks (10-9) tied the game in the fifth and then scored 11 runs in their final two trips to the plate to invoke the mercy rule.
Brady Marshall went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored; Justin Bremner was 2 for 4 with two runs scored; and Nolan Smith, who ended the game with a leaping catch at first base, finished 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Brady McGuire led off the fifth inning with a triple and scored on Marshall’s RBI single to tie the game 1-1.
Bremner led off the top of the seventh inning with a bloop single over first base and, with the runner in motion, Nathan Borchardt hit a single to right field that sent Bremner all the way to third base. McGuire then walked to load the bases, chasing Niagara starter Kaleb Locatelli from the game. Marshall greeted reliever Ryan Stubbs with a go-ahead RBI single to plate Bremner. Before the inning was over, Blake Herman hit a sacrifice fly, Marshall and McGuire executed a double steal to plate Jamestown’s fourth run, and after a walk and a balk, Matthew Dumas hit a two-run single to center field to make it 6-1.
In the top of the eighth inning, Bremner singled with one out and Borchardt followed with a walk. Bremner then stole third and McGuire walked to once again load the bases. A wild pitch scored Bremner, Marshall hit a two-run single to right field, Herman singled and Joaquin Rodriguez-Costa was hit by a pitch. A balk forced in Marshall and Eddie Dolansky hit a two-run single to left field to cap the scoring.
Jamestown is off today before returning home to play the Niagara Falls Americans at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Diethrick Park.
