JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Will Taylor struck out Dylan Fatovich with two runners on to end the game as the Jamestown Tarp Skunks won Game 2 of a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader against the Elmira Pioneers on Sunday at Diethrick Park.

Jamestown improved to 9-8 in the West Division with the victory while Elmira fell to 11-6. The Pioneers won Game 1 Sunday 5-3.

In the nightcap, Nolan Smith led off the bottom of the first with a single, went to second on a walk to Jakob Haynes and eventually scored on an RBI single by Brady McGuire to give the Tarp Skunks a 1-0 lead.

The advantage grew to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Joaquin Rodriguez-Costa reached on a two-out error and scored on Blake Herman’s RBI triple.

The Pioneers got a run back in the top of the sixth inning, but that’s all they could score on Jamestown starter Nick Ianniello, who tossed 5 1/3 innings of two-hit ball with three walks and a strikeout.

The Tarp Skunks added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nick Borchardt singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before McGuire was hit by a pitch. Cole Swift then pinch-ran for Borchardt and scored on Brady Marshall’s RBI single. McGuire scored the final run on Dom Costello’s RBI groundout.

Taylor earned the save over 1 2/3 innings of two-hit ball, striking out a pair.

Elmira led 5-0 entering the final inning of Game 1 before Jamestown made it interesting with a three-run bottom of the seventh.

Haynes led off with a double and pinch-runner Chase Haglund went to third on Justin Bremner’s single. Borchardt walked to load the bases, Marshall drew a one-out bases-loaded walk, Costello hit an RBI single and Ty Lagoni hit an RBI single to make it 5-3, but the Tarp Skunks could get no closer as the Pioneers’ Andrew Jones earned the save with a pair of flyouts to end the game.

Christian Pencek started for Jamestown, allowing five runs on eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out two in 4 1/3 innings to earn his first loss of the season. Mark Holm threw the final 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one.

Costello finished with two of the Tarp Skunks’ five hits.

Jamestown will finish its homestand at 6:30 p.m. today against the Batavia Muckdogs. It is a $2 night, which includes hot dogs, beer and bleacher tickets.

SATURDAY

JAMESTOWN 12, BATAVIA 7

Jamestown collected 13 hits, including three apiece by Brady McGuire and Nathan Borchardt, to post a 12-7 victory over Batavia on Saturday at Diethrick Park.

The win, which avenged an 18-8 setback to the Muckdogs on Friday, pushed the Tarp Skunks’ record to 8-7.

It didn’t start out in promising fashion for the hosts, however.

In fact, Batavia put the first five runners on base in the top of the first inning when it plated three runs off Jamestown starter Hunter Bell.

The Tarp Skunks, who won despite committing five errors, took the lead by scoring four times in the bottom of the second, highlighted by RBI singles from Brady Marshall and Dom Costello, and a two-run triple by Eric Weeks. Three third-inning defensive miscues by Jamestown allowed the Muckdogs to regain the advantage, 6-4, but the Tarp Skunks responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by two Batavia errors and an RBI single from McGuire.

Armed with an 8-6 lead, Jamestown added a run in the fourth and three more in the seventh to win going away.

Daniel Thomas was the winner in relief. He and fellow reliever, Jasean Brown, combined to pitch 6 â…” innings of three-hit ball.

Tyler Castrataro had three hits and Justin Espinal added a pair for Batavia (10-6).

Starting at $3.50/week.
