Warren struggles at tennis districts
ERIE — Four members of Warren’s boys tennis team traveled to the Westwood Racquet Club on Saturday to participate in the District 10 3A singles championships. The tournament is actually made up of three districts with D10, D9 and D8 participating.
“Our boys have had a great season, but Saturday wasn’t our day,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “I think we got there a little too early and had too much sitting around. Outside of Brody Alexander, everyone was taken out in the opening round and just got in a hole early with slow starts.”
Warren junior Lucas Thrift lost in the opening round (5-8) to the top player from DuBois, according to Pellegrino.
Jaxon Thrift, making his district debut as a freshman, lost to Erie High’s No. 4 (6-8) in the opening round.
Alexander defeated the No. 2 from DuBois in Round 1 before falling to the top seed from McDowell (1-8) in the Round of 16.
Adam Strandburg received the No. 3 seed from a successful regular season, but he was upset in the Round of 16 by McDowell’s No. 3 (5-8).
“Overall, it just wasn’t our day and we are shifting all focus to the district doubles tournament on Wednesday,” said Pellegrino. “We will be sending three teams and hope to have much more success than on Saturday.”
The D10 3A doubles championships will begin Wednesday morning at the Westwood Racquet Club.
At 3 p.m. today, Erie High’s Aryan Noticewala will face McDowell’s David Mikotowicz in the D10 3A singles final.
