Tri-County tennis champs

SHARON — Warren’s boys tennis team won its third straight Tri-County Tennis Tournament on Wednesday at Buhl Park.

“This is an event the kids look forward to every year as it allows every team member to participate in varsity matches that will add points to the overall team score,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino.

The day started off with the largest event, fourth doubles. “We have a 28-man roster this season so we were able to put eight different pairs into this bracket,” he said.

Karson Werner and Trent Alexander lost in Round 1 to Hickory 8-1.

Karson Werner and Liam Bailey lost in Round 1 to Hickory 8-3.

Lincoln Olsen and Sebastian Lawson won their first round, 8-4 over Titusville, and lost 8-5 in Round 2 to Harbor Creek.

Yaman Kolasinli and Tobiah Reinard beat Grove City in the opening round 8-1, in Round 2 defeated Harbor Creek 8-1, then were taken out in the quarterfinals by Warren teammates Owen Baldensperger and Bill Bennett 8-4.

Bennett and Baldensperger captured the fourth doubles title by first getting a bye in Round 1, defeating Meadvillle 8-1 in Round 2, Warren 8-4 in the quarters, Hickory 8-1 in the semis, and defeating Westover/Holmberg 8-2 in the championship.

Adam Strandburg had the highlight of the tournament, taking out three of the top players in the district to capture the first singles title. He avenged his loss from earlier in the season, defeating Meadville in the opening round 8-7 (8-6), Harbor Creek 8-5 in the semifinals, and Hickory 10-3 in the finals.

Lucas Thrift was defeated by Oil City in the opening round 8-6 at second singles.

Brody Alexander made it all the way to the finals at third singles, taking out Kennedy Catholic 8-0 in Round 1, Meadville 8-2 in the semis, and falling 0-10 to Harbor Creek in the finals.

At fourth singles, Collin Ellis defeated Harbor Creek 8-4 in the first round and fell 5-8 in the semis to Grove City.

“Overall, it was a great day of tennis and we were impressed with how the entire team played today,” said Pellegrino. “We had many first-year players go out and get their letters and multiple pairs and players grab some impressive wins over some strong competition. We were able to end the day in six of eight finals, winning five of them and coming out on top out of 10 total teams.”

Warren had 43 total team points to second-place Hickory’s 27.

Warren will take its top four players to Erie this Saturday as they compete in the District 10 singles tournament at Westwood Racquet Club.

Starting at $3.50/week.
