Track season ends at states

Warren’s Spiegel 16th, Newton 20th, 3,200 relay 26th in Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG — Five Warren Area High School track and field athletes in three events ended their seasons on Saturday at the PIAA Class 3A track and field championships at Shippensburg University.

Warren’s District 10 championship girls’ 4×800 relay team of juniors Lilly Newton, Morgan Alexander and Riley Evan, and sophomore Brynn Norris finished 26th in 10:08.65. Central Bucks East’s team won the state title at 9:03.23.

Newton also won an individual D10 title in girls high jump and finished 20th out of 30 at Seth Grove Stadium. She completed a 5-foot jump to tie for 20th after winning districts at 5-1. Destini Smith of Souderton Area High School won with a height of 5 feet, 7 inches. By comparison, Newton tied the WAHS school record of 5-5 earlier this season. That successful height would have put her into state medal range Saturday.

Also a D10 3A champ in high jump, Warren sophomore Max Spiegel was last to compete on Saturday afternoon and finished 16th out of 26. His 6-foot-2 height was just 4 inches from becoming a state medalist. Spiegel’s “PR” was 6-4 in his first season competing in high school track. Dallastown senior Jalen Cook broke the boys’ Class 3A state meet record in winning at 7 feet, 3 inches.

On Friday, the Class 2A boys’ high jump state title was won by Ligonier Valley senior John Jabunovsky at 6-6; that means Sheffield’s Matt Benson continues to hold the PIAA 2A meet record at 7-1 set in 1992.

Starting at $3.50/week.
