Sheffield ‘so close’ at final D9 meet
BROOKVILLE — Sheffield’s boys and girls track teams finished their final season at the District 9 2A Championships on Friday in Brookville without a state qualifier.
“In a year of so much joy, celebration and emotion,” Sheffield coach Jason Snell said it ended in typical 2025 fashion, “with a rain, thunder and lightning delay and another scenario of ‘so close.’
“As the weather delay is understandable for all, the ‘so close’ is the one with more detail,” he said. “Just as the season had many — Colby Barr a hundredth of a second off of the school record in the 400, the girls 4×100 relay right at the cusp of that school record, the Lady Wolverines 3 points away from ending the season 8-3 instead of finishing 6-5, so many just missing the district qualifier mark and not being accepted as a provisional, but Friday’s ‘so close’ really pulled at the heartstrings.”
The senior Barr qualified to compete in four events Friday, but the aforementioned 400 meters was the biggest ‘so close.’
“Qualifying for the 400-meter event for the third year in a row, (we) knew there was an extremely stacked field in the event, but without a fear, wanted to use that to give him his best time of the year, that school record, and a D9 medal,” said Snell. “In a race of all effort and leaving nothing out there, Colby crossed the finish line with a time of 52.89. A fantastic time. When the live results came up, they revealed that, by a tenth of a second, Barr was in seventh place, just missing the medal stand by that tenth of a second. … To see him so close absolutely broke my heart. But the Colby we know and love had the, ‘I gotta get ready for the 200 mentality.’ That young man is going to go places in life. He defines leadership and wherever he takes his path into adulthood, those around him will be blessed.
“The rest of the Wolverines, I feel very similar about,” added Snell. “Hardworking, invested in accomplishing the best possible outcomes, but most of all, dealing with adversity and remaining positive. Though results may be what these young ladies and young men will remember, the life lessons they learned in athletics at Sheffield High School will be what defines them in their best years to come. No matter what successful results you may get on an athletic stage as a coach, those results aren’t your favorite moments, truthfully, for me or the many other peers I have gotten the pleasure of coaching with. It’s the watching your young athlete go into the next phase of life prepared and do so well in a world that is so tough and not very kind most of the time. We can only hope and pray that those orange-and-black hearts, we hopefully helped shape, will be better human beings and, when times get tough, they are equipped for the next steps. (The) lessons they learned in Sheffield athletics and at Sheffield High School, with or without them knowing, will shape them into being the best them. That is my parting wish for each and every one of them. Love is not a lightly used term in Sheffield, Pennsylvania.”

“The kids have so been blessed over the year with amazing coaches that care so much,” said Coach Snell. “We could not have done it without them and their commitment — Amy O’Donnell (jumps), Tommy Hammerbeck (hurdles), Dave Fitch (sprints/relays), Tyler West (throwing), Nathan Lindberg (distance), Walker Kyler (everything/everywhere), Conner Winslow (throws), and our Abraxas coaches Travis Troutman, Kevin Gabler, Sue Silvis and Samantha Knapp.”
